What happens to my student loans?

You can access all your federal student loan information by visiting studentaid.gov. You will log in using your Federal Student Aid username and password.

If you graduate, drop below half-time enrollment, or withdraw, your federal loans will move into repayment. Federal Direct Loans typically come with a six-month grace period before repayment begins. During this time, your loan servicer will contact you with details about your repayment plan, monthly payment amount, and available options. If Limestone is no longer operating when you’re enrolled, you may qualify for a Closed School Loan Discharge. Learn more about eligibility and how to apply at: studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/closed-school.

Key points include:

  • Students transferring 48+ credit hours from Limestone are generally exempt from the general education core at the receiving university.
  • Transfer credits in the student’s major discipline will be fully applied toward major requirements, with students needing to complete the minimum major credits at the new institution.
  • Courses from Limestone will be transcripted as if taken at the receiving university, including grades counting toward GPA, even for grades as low as D- (unlike typical transfer credit standards).
  • This special treatment acknowledges the forced transfer circumstances and supports students’ academic continuity, especially for juniors/seniors.
  • Some programs, particularly nursing and education, may require tailored pathways due to professional licensure requirements.
  • The policy is designed mainly for majors with clear equivalents between Limestone and the new university (e.g., biology, business, criminal justice, psychology).

Overall, the university commits to flexible, good-faith efforts to accommodate these transfer students fairly and efficiently.
