Limestone College’s Dr. Cindy Cavanaugh was recently recognized as the Teacher of the Year in Higher Education at the 91st annual South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (SCAHPERD) Conference held November 9-11 in Myrtle Beach.
Professor Cavanaugh is the Chair of Limestone’s Education Department and is the College’s Physical Education-Teacher Education Coordinator. She holds degrees from the University of Georgia, Utah State University, Northern Illinois University, and Western Illinois University.
In 2017, Cavanaugh received the Excellence In Teaching Award from the S.C. Independent Colleges & Universities.
The South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance is the only association for professionals involved in health, physical, and dance education, in South Carolina. Members are current, retired, or future professionals who work in schools, higher education, community organizations, government, and non-government organizations. The mission of SCAHPERD is “to promote health, physical activity, and wellness among the state’s citizens through effective leadership, professional development, education, and advocacy.”
Three of Limestone’s Physical Education-Teacher Certification majors, Alex Grooms, Brooks McGinnis, and Brendan Smith, attended the SCHPERD conference. Two of the students, Grooms and Smith, led a presentation entitled “Sports, Recreation, and Every Day Life.”
