FINANCIAL AID TIPS FOR ADULT STUDENTS

As a working student, starting or finishing your degree is a complex decision. With so many factors to consider, it can be difficult to ensure you’re making the right decision – personally, professionally, and financially. Don’t get caught up in the complexities! There is never a wrong time to invest in your future, and we’ve made it even easier by compiling a list of the best financial aid tips for adult students. Paying for college is more affordable than you think!

1)      Check your company’s tuition reimbursement policy

If your employer offers a tuition reimbursement program, this can be a great way to get part of your tuition costs covered while balancing work and your degree. After all, your education is an asset to your company. Check with your supervisors or Human Resources staff to check if a program is offered, and what the requirements are. Most employers prefer that your degree is related to your position or place of business, so be mindful of that when you are choosing a program. This can be a great way to move up in your company or explore other opportunities within your field.

2)     Don’t forget the FAFSA

Yes, there is federal financial aid available for adult students! You may be eligible for the FAFSA, which opens on October 1st. Don’t wait to fill it out – the sooner you submit, the more financial aid you may receive. You will need important documents like your Social Security number, driver’s license, and tax forms. For more information on what you need to apply, how to apply, and when to apply, check out “Federal Student Aid for Adult Students” from fafsa.gov.

3)     Explore state financial aid programs

South Carolina offers a tuition grant program that provides need-based aid to eligible students. You must be an in-state adult student, obtaining an initial undergraduate degree from a participating college. If you’re based in South Carolina and plan on attending an in-state school, this is an option worth exploring. Paying for college can be very affordable through programs like this.

4)     Look into corporate or military grants

You may be eligible for a corporate tuition grant if your employer is a partner with Limestone College. Through this program, your tuition rate is reduced 10% to make your education even more affordable. For a full list of partners, read more.

Additionally, active duty military personnel receive a discount close to one-half of the regular tuition rate for associate and bachelor’s degree programs at Limestone College. This includes all military organizations, active duty, reserves, and national guard. For more information about the LC Military discount, click here.

5)     Reach out to the financial aid office

Building a relationship with your college’s financial aid office is smart for a few reasons. They will be able to explain all the grants, scholarships, loans, and other aid programs that you may receive and could be eligible for. Additionally, they will work with you to ensure that you are getting the best return on your investment and that you are prepared for your future in a fiscally smart manner. Financial aid for adult students is available, you just have to know who to talk to!

Throughout the whole process, make sure that you are communicating with your admissions counselor and keeping them updated. Let them know if you’re having any difficulties or come across unforeseen challenges – they are a great resource for all things related to the enrollment process, which also includes paying for your education.

Also, don’t forget to check on outside scholarships and resources that may not be highly publicized – local groups, organizations, and churches may have funds available for qualifying students.  Just a quick online search, and you’ll find that there are scholarships based on everything from hobbies to professional interests – even just for being left handed!

6)     Don’t believe the myths

You may think that adult students are not eligible for financial aid, that you must pass a credit check, or that your aid is only allowed to go towards your tuition. That is simply not true! There is no age limit to apply for federal aid, and almost everyone is eligible for something. No credit check is required either – don’t let that intimidate you. And, in addition to paying for tuition, fees, books, and other usual expenses, your aid can be put towards things like purchasing a personal computer or paying for dependent care. Adult students have unique needs when it comes to obtaining a degree, and financial aid is adaptable to those needs.

When it comes to financial aid, it is easy to get overwhelmed with the numbers. Stay positive and keep a clear head – paying for your education is affordable, especially with the right school and the right staff to help you understand what financial aid is best for you.
