Imagine giving faith to the hopeless, power to the powerless, a voice to the silenced. As a social worker, you can make a difference in the lives of others when they are at their most desperate and vulnerable. Do you have what it takes? Social work is a challenging but rewarding career. If you want to live a life of purpose, consider how social work can change lives—including your own.
Job satisfaction is critical to how you feel about yourself and your life. After all, you spend a lot of time at work. And studies show that people who help others find more meaning in their work. As a social worker, you can support individuals, organizations, and entire communities. You help others solve problems that they can’t solve on their own. For example, if you worked as a school social worker, you would assist children with problems like bullying or aggression. If you worked as a healthcare social worker, you might help patients understand their diagnoses and how they can live with them, both physically and mentally.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of social workers is expected to increase much faster than the average through 2029. And if you specialize in the areas in most need of your services, like substance abuse and mental health, the demand is even stronger. The BLS expects a 25% increase in demand for these professionals. An in-demand job is one with purpose and fulfillment.
You want to help others, but who, where, how? Do you want to help people find success through substance abuse programs? Or do you want to work in protective services for children? At the other end of the spectrum, maybe you’d like to help seniors deal with the challenges of aging. There is also need for social workers for those who are incarcerated, victims of crime, ill, and dying. There are many paths you might take as a social worker.
When you help others in any of these roles, it can feel emotional at times. To hear the stories of children who have been abused or to assist those who are facing life and death decision can take a toll. But when you know you make a difference, it can make a difference to you.
