Brian Winegardner joined the faculty of Limestone University in 2017 and currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet and Director of the Brass Ensemble.
An active orchestral performer, Dr. Winegardner currently holds the position of Second/Associate Principal Trumpet with the Knoxville Symphony (Knoxville, TN) and the South Carolina Philharmonic (Columbia, SC) and is Principal Trumpet of the Augusta Symphony (Augusta, GA). In the past, he has also been a trumpet section member of the Charlotte Symphony (Charlotte, NC), the Miami Symphony (Miami, FL), and the Saginaw Bay Symphony (Saginaw, MI). Additionally, he has performed with and been on the substitute list for many orchestras throughout the United States, including the Seattle Symphony, New World Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Orlando Philharmonic, and Florida Grand Opera. His performance credits include recordings with Equilibrium Records and he has participated in performances with musicians such as Helmuth Rilling, Keith Lockhart, Giancarlo Guerrero, Arturo Sandoval, Tim Morrison, Sam Pilafian, Ben Folds, Natalie Cole, and Kenny G.
As a recipient of the prestigious University Fellowship which included a substantial stipend and full tuition remission, Dr. Winegardner was awarded his DMA in Trumpet Performance from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. His dissertation, “A Performer’s Guide to Concertos for Trumpet and Orchestra by Lowell Liebermann and John Williams,” has been downloaded over 6,000 times by readers across the globe. His studies at the University of Miami also included a Cognate in Musicology, serving as a teaching assistant for several Musicology courses, and coaching an undergraduate brass quintet. Prior to this, he was awarded a Master of Music Degree in Trumpet Performance, a Master of Music Degree in Chamber Music, a Bachelor of Music Degree with High Honors in Trumpet Performance, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Distinction in History from the University of Michigan. His principal teachers have included Craig Morris, William Campbell, and Jean Moorhead Libs. He has had additional studies with James Wilt, Robert Sullivan, Mark Hughes, Mark Niehaus, Mark Schubert, and John Rommel.
Dr. Winegardner is a member of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) and has been a first place winner of the organization's Mock Orchestral Audition Competition. He serves as a music and recording reviewer for ITG and his reviews have been published over twenty times in ITG’s quarterly journals. He is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Alpha Lambda Delta, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Brian and his wife Julia, an orchestra teacher at Piedmont International Baccalaureate Middle School, live in Charlotte, N.C. In addition to his orchestral and teaching commitments, he frequently performs in the Charlotte area as a freelance musician with, among others, the Charlotte Symphony, Carolina Brass (of Charlotte), Da Capo Brass Quintet, Central Piedmont Community College, and Myers Park Methodist Church.
