For her accomplishments as a scholar, teacher, and administrator, Dr. Anne Lockwood was granted the status of Professor Emerita of English during the May 7 commencement ceremony at Fullerton Auditorium.
“Dr. Lockwood has always demonstrated outstanding service to her students, her colleagues, and to the College community overall,” Limestone President Dr. Walt Griffin said of the retiring professor. “For 16 years, she has been beloved and revered in the academic setting at Limestone College and she will be missed immensely. We wish her all the best in her retirement.”
A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Lockwood was perhaps predestined for a career in higher education. Her mother taught Home Economics at the University of Minnesota, and her father was the supervisor of the Seed Laboratory for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. In 1970, Dr. Lockwood earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Oberlin College, where she graduated cum laude. She spent her junior year abroad at the American University of Beirut, a trip that proved to be the beginning of a lifetime involvement with international travel, the Middle East in particular, and education.
In 1971, Dr. Lockwood received a master’s degree in English from Duke University with an emphasis in eighteenth century literature. She spent the academic year 1976-77 at the University of Cairo in Egypt. In 1997, Dr. Lockwood earned the Ph.D. in nineteenth-century British literature and Post-colonialism from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
After teaching appointments at the North Carolina School for the Arts, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Dr. Lockwood accepted a position at Limestone College in 1999.
Dr. Lockwood has remained active with numerous publications and a variety of academic presentations at several national and international conferences. Her lifelong engagement with scholarship and academic service has included memberships in South Carolina Women in Higher Education, the International Society for Travel Writing, and the South Carolina Commission on Women Alliance. Dr. Lockwood was the recipient of the Fullerton Foundation Teaching Award in 2002.
In addition to Dr. Lockwood’s contributions as a scholar and professor, she has also served the College in a variety of administrative capacities. From 2002-2005, Dr. Lockwood served as Faculty Advisor for the Alpha Chi National Honor Society. During that same time period, she chaired the Department of English, Theatre, and Modern Languages. From 2000-2005, Dr. Lockwood served as Chair of the Division of Arts and Letters, and from 2005-2008 she served as the Academic Dean.
