The Limestone College & Community Chorus will help usher in the holiday season this weekend as it performs Part I of Handel's "Messiah” at First Baptist Church in Gaffney.
Accompanied by a chamber orchestra, the Chorus performance will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, and admission is free.
The 40-member chorus is conducted by Dr. Gena Poovey, Professor of Choral/Vocal Music Education and Director of Choral Activities at Limestone. Accompanist is Limestone Professor of Music Dr. David Thompson. Eight other instrumentalists will also take part.
"We typically do Handel's Messiah once every few years so all students get a chance to perform it during college," Dr. Poovey explained. "The performance of ‘Messiah’ in its entirety would take over three hours. Consequently, Part I or Parts II and III are often presented independently. For the audience’s utmost satisfaction we will close the concert with the beloved favorite, ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’ which actually is the ending movement of Part II.”
This weekend's "Messiah" concert is the first of two major holiday events being presented by the College's music department.
Limestone will hold a "Sounds of the Season" concert Saturday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in Fullerton Auditorium as part of the College’s annual “Christmas on Campus” event. On that night, there will also be a luminaries lighting, the lighting of the Christmas tree on the front campus, and a visit from Santa Claus.
Also, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, the Limestone Wind Ensemble will perform a concert at Fullerton Auditorium beginning at 7:30 p.m.
