Limestone College Volunteers Pack 100,000 Meals

Nineteen Limestone College sports teams and Cherokee County eighth graders helped package 100,000 meals destined for Third World countries.

An assembly line process was used Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 22-23, to combine rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a packet with 23 essential vitamins into small meal packages. The meals will be shipped worldwide by Stop Hunger Now relief organization to food assistance programs in developing countries such as Venezuela, Syria, Belize and Colombia.

Limestone College Chaplain Rev. Ron Singleton learned about Stop Hunger Now when he attended a conference several years ago. Since its founding in 1998, the international hunger relief organization has provided more than 20 million meal packages to feed the hungry in 78 countries.

“We thought this was a great program, and it’s making a global impact from right here at home,” Singleton said. “Limestone has a wonderful tradition of serving others. This service project ties in directly with our student mission trips to Belize each year through the Christian Education and Leadership Program.”

The meal packaging project was held just prior to Limestone College starting classes Aug. 24.

This is the sixth year Limestone students have participated in the service project sponsored by the college’s Christian Education and Leadership Program. Gaffney Rotary Club members helped 8th-grade student leaders from Cherokee County middle schools finish the meal packages Tuesday morning.
