Limestone Faculty, Students Present & Volunteer At Social Work Symposium

Limestone College was well represented at a recent Social Work symposium held in Columbia as faculty members and their students made presentations.

Limestone instructors attending the symposium included Professor Tim Hanshaw, Adjunct Instructor Antoinette “Toni” Sanders, and Social Work Preceptor Dr. Aubrey L. Sejuit. In addition to making presentations, Limestone students volunteered at the National Association of Social Workers for the South Carolina Chapter (NASW-SC) Symposium held March 25-27.

At the symposium, social workers from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and other areas were on hand to earn continuing education units toward social work licensure and to interact with fellow social work students and professionals.

During the event, Limestone’s Social Work students had the opportunity to network with professionals from many fields. Student Rochelle Goodwin and Sejuit presented “Addiction Does Not Discriminate: A Drug and Alcohol Primer for Social Workers,” while student Winfred Walker and Sejuit, along with Limestone graduate and current Master of Social Work (MSW) candidate at the University of South Carolina Danelle Magalit, presented “Ruck Up: Understanding the Needs of Student Veterans.”

Limestone students who served as volunteers for the event included Sheila Adamson-Postema, Shalon Collins, Goodwin, Carolyn Hillier, Hailey Jones, Meryl Litwin, Angel Mims, Falonda Smith, Terry Walker, Winfred Walker, and Jessica Waltower. Student Marc Burrows was in attendance as well to support fellow students and faculty who presented.

Sejuit and Goodwin presented their research based on addictions. The presentation focused on commonly used drugs and their street names, along with warning signs of alcohol and drug abuse. The pair also introduced participants to recent drug and alcohol trends.

Alongside Walker and Magalit, Sejuit presented on the needs of veterans in higher education and shared some of her past dissertation research. Afterwards, Walker and Magalit sat on a panel, along with another student veteran MSW candidate from USC, to address ways in which faculty and staff can help student veterans on college campuses.

Students who are interested in serving as a volunteer for the NASW-SC Symposium in the future can email Sejuit at asejuit@limestone.edu. Students seeking an internship in March of next year can email Hanshaw at thanshaw@limestone.edu or Professor Lisa Glenn at lglenn@limestone.edu.
