Limestone University professor Tim Hanshaw was a part of a national task force that recently developed the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) latest resource for military social work programs looking to provide better care to veteran and active-duty military clients.

The “Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Military and Veteran Social Work” is the first specialized curricular guide for the “Educational Policy and Accreditation Standard” competencies developed to assist social work programs in implementing courses that will strengthen professional social work assessment and intervention techniques when providing services. The guide will be included in the updated CSWE accreditation standards, which aims to ensure quality education and preparation of social workers to create and sustain healthy communities.

The resources provide educators with recommended guidelines, readings, and media materials to facilitate discussion, and ideas for class and field assignments that educate students on social work’s role in war and conflict. All together, these resources help students understand their lasting impact on individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations.

In addition to the task force, made up of Hanshaw and other select social work educators across the nation, the curricular guide was developed through the support of the Cohen Veterans Network and the Council on Social Work Education.

Hanshaw is a Professor of Social Work at Limestone, also serving as a Field Coordinator who supervises numerous internships each year.

He graduated from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Arts in both psychology and sociology before receiving his Master of Social Work from Radford University. Driving his work for the military community is the fact Hanshaw is himself a veteran and recipient of six military medals. In addition, Hanshaw served as support for operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
