Limestone University graduate student Krystel Hannon was recently announced as a recipient of the 2022 Palmetto Gold Award, which is given annually to those nurses who have been recognized by their employers and peers as some of the best in the state of South Carolina.
Hannon began working as a nurse in 2011 and is now a Case Manager with Spartanburg Regional Home Health in Cherokee County.
“It is an amazing honor to be nominated for this award,” she said. “I never even thought that what I do on a daily basis was noticed. This award quantifies the hard work, heart, time, efforts, education, skills, and sacrifices necessary to be a nurse.”
Hannon’s work doesn’t stop when she is off the clock or out of the classroom, however. On top of being a professional nurse, a student, and a parent of five children, she finds time to offer her nursing skills to serve the local community, whether teaching CPR courses for the Cherokee County Girl Scouts or volunteering as a nurse at the WinShape Camp.
“I’m thrilled that Krystel is being honored with this recognition,” said Amber Williams, the Director of Limestone’s Nursing Program. “It is truly wonderful that our state continues to honor those nurses showing excellence in their practice.”
Started in 2002, the Palmetto Gold Awards serve a two-fold purpose: first to recognize the excellence of registered nurses in South Carolina, and second, to support the future of nursing by providing a nursing scholarship to each registered nursing undergraduate program in the state. The group has given away nearly $500,000 in nursing scholarships since its inception.
Originally from Saucier, Mississippi, Hannon received an associate degree in nursing from Gardner-Webb University in 2013 before continuing her education at Limestone, receiving a bachelor’s degree in nursing in December 2021. She is currently enrolled in Limestone’s Dual-Degree program, working toward her Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration.
