Limestone Students Present Research At State Conference

Limestone College seniors Kelsia Sumrell and Clif Decius recently presented professor Dr. Felicia Cavallini’s research entitled “A Broad-Minded, Community Approach to Depict What Lifestyle Physical Activity Could Look Like” at an education conference in Myrtle Beach.

The two Physical Education majors presented the research based on Cavallini’s Fulbright experience in Canada, which resulted in the “MyLimestone”, and “MyResidence” activity graphics that can be found around campus. The graphics demonstrate how people are able achieve the suggested 150 minutes of physical activity per week within familiar places such as Limestone and within the comfort of their homes.

At the 91st annual South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) Conference held November 9-11, Sumrell and Decius presented the graphics in front of an audience that included educators from the University of South Carolina, The Citadel, Winthrop University, and other higher education institutions. They had the opportunity to highlight the graphics and demonstrate how they can be adapted to elementary and secondary education environments.

“I am proud to be a part of the graphics design process,” Sumrell said. “The graphics are not specific to just Limestone and are designed so they can be used in any environment.”

“The graphics show how exercise outside of the gym can be a part of everyday life,” Decius noted. “Personally, I like the ‘My Work Activity’ best because I have a part-time job and I do not always have the time for scheduled exercise. The graphic shows me how, even at work, I can achieve the suggested amount of daily physical activity.”

Cavallini was awarded the prestigious, internationally distinguished Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant for 2014-2015 as a Visiting Research Chair in the Human Health and Nutritional Sciences Department at the University of Guelph. Cavallini taught and conducted research in collaboration with the faculty and serves as an ambassador to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and Canada.

“I selected Kelsia and Clif to present the posters because of the amazing work ethic they both have,” Cavallini said. “They have positive attitudes and are always willing to participate. I am proud that, thanks to Limestone, I was able to reward them by inviting them to present our research.”

Sumrell, from Easley, is a member of the College’s track & field team. Decius, who is on the Limestone men’s wrestling team, is from Miami, FL.

Limestone seniors Taylour Hunter and Trellequala Bomar made a similar presentation at the recent Fulbright Association annual conference in Puebla, Mexico.
