Limestone College Associate Professor of Human Resource Management Dr. Deitra Payne recently made a presentation at the annual conference for the College and University Professional Association (CUPA-HR) for Human Resources.
The conference, which was held September 16-18 in San Diego, attracts thousands of Human Resources professionals each year from colleges and universities across the nation.
Payne presented during a concurrent session focused on using emotional intelligence as a way to mitigate workplace bullying. She will also do a College and University Professional Association for Human Resources webinar on the same presentation later this month.
At the CUPA-HR conference last year, Payne presented, “The Bullying Effect: Costs and Consequences to an Organization.”
A Workplace Bulling Institute survey found that 20 percent of respondents reported having been bullied, while 21 percent reported having witnessed bullying, 23 percent stated that they were aware of workplace bullying, and seven percent indicated they were currently being bullied. A WBI survey also found that bullying drove 71 percent of targets to seek treatment from a physician and 29 percent contemplated suicide.
Countless studies have indicated that individuals who are bullied in the workplace experience increased levels of stress and anxiety, high blood pressure, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide ideation.
