Social Work Month Spotlight: Meet Madelyn Grant

Madelyn Grant Testimonial

Meet Madelyn Grant, a dedicated sophomore from Irmo, South Carolina, whose passion for helping others has found a home at Limestone University. As we celebrate National Social Work Month, Madelyn’s journey reflects the heart of what it means to pursue a life of service and advocacy. Her time at Limestone is shaping not only her academic path, but also her commitment to making a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals and communities.

Why did you choose to major in social work, and why did you choose Limestone in particular?
I chose to major in social work because I want to offer others the support I needed growing up. Limestone University is one of the few colleges in South Carolina that offers a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW), which was one of my main criteria when selecting a college. Beyond that, I wanted a small school where I could build relationships with my professors and not just be another number. I also really wanted a school with a football team, which is hard to find at smaller colleges. Limestone had everything I was looking for, and when I visited campus, it just felt right. I couldn’t imagine being at any other school—this is the perfect place for me.

How has the Limestone social work program helped instill in you the values necessary for a career in social work?
From day one in the social work program at Limestone, you learn about the social work ethical principles. It’s clear that education and preparation for professional practice are taken seriously here. Learning about ethics and the role of a social worker in society truly forms the foundation of our discipline. Given the amount of time we spend studying ethics and ethical principles, I feel fully prepared to enter the field.

What do you hope to do after Limestone, and what is the program doing to help you reach your goals?
After earning my BSW, I hope to get a job in the social work field and begin working toward my MSW. Limestone offers a unique opportunity to complete my MSW in just one year after finishing my BSW, which is incredibly valuable. In the field of social work, a master’s degree is often essential for doing specialized work, so the fact that Limestone keeps that in mind and provides a clear path forward is unmatched.
