Six of Limestone College’s Sport Management students were recently invited to the annual Sport and Entertainment Venues Tomorrow (SEVT) Conference in Columbia.
The students accompanied Limestone Associate Professor of Sport management Dr. Jaime Orejan. Joining the College’s faculty earlier this year, Orejan is also the Chair of the Sport Management Department.
The SEVT Conference brings together sport and entertainment industry leaders, students, and those teaching future sport business leaders to discuss and analyze the sport, entertainment, and venues industry.
Initially, Orejan intended on attending the conference solely to present a research paper entitled “The Value of Experiential Learning in Sport Management.” However, he decided to ask the students in the major if they were interested in attending the conference and participating in the SEVT’s case competition. The students who accepted the invitation were Daniel Bland, Lelia Stokes, Kendall Collins, Mallory Gardner, Courtney Lafler, and Lauren Chong.
The students were invited to participate in a case competition against undergraduate students from other higher education institutions, such as the University of South Carolina and Ohio University. For the case competition, each team was given a week prior to the conference to develop a solution to a case study that presented a real-life scenario presented by AT&T. At the conference, each team had 15 minutes to present its solution to a panel of judges.
“Our students mentioned to me that they had never gone to a conference like this in their last few years at Limestone,” Orejan said. “The finished among the top three in the case competition and made me very proud. They represented Limestone extremely well.”
The students also attended several research presentations that were a part of the conference.
Prior to his arrival at Limestone, Orejan previously served as a professor of Sport Management at Elon University, Desales University, Loras College, University of Southern Mississippi, and Winston Salem State University. He has also taught in the online MBA in Sport Business programs at Saint Leo University and Adelphi University.
