Limestone College’s Department of Music will present its annual Spring Choral Concert on Thursday, April 27, at Gaffney’s First Baptist Church.
Admission to the 7:30 p.m. concert by the Limestone College and Community Chorus is free and the public is invited to attend.
The performance includes a modern, moving work called “Requiem for the Living.” The Latin word, “requiem” is translated to mean “rest,” and Dan Forrest has composed the work with the intention of offering rest and encouragement to the listeners and performers through the music he has composed and through the texts taken from various parts of the traditional worship service.
The 36-voice chorus will sing “Requiem for the Living” with a chamber orchestra, including harp, organ, timpani, flute, oboe, horn, violin, and cello.
The chorus is conducted by Limestone Professor of Choral/Vocal Music Education Dr. Gena E. Poovey and is accompanied by Limestone Professor of Music Dr. David B. Thompson.
“This is one of the most beautiful works I have had the good fortune to conduct,” Dr. Poovey said. “The students liked the music from the first day we began learning it. They each have their favorite moments in the music and they are so excited about this upcoming performance.”
The concert will begin with the “Star Spangled Banner” and will include an energetic gospel arrangement called “I Sing Because I’m Happy,” as well as Limestone’s alma mater and the Lutkin Benediction.
Community members who sing in the Chorus represent Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, Circle of Grace Lutheran Chapel, First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, Grassy Pond Baptist Church, Limestone Presbyterian Church, and Pine Grove Baptist Church in Blacksburg.
The performance is being dedicated to the honor of the faculty, staff and students of Limestone College.
