Students Represent Limestone at SCICU Event

Limestone students Fabian Jefferson and Dalton Yates represented the College at the S.C. Independent College & University (SCICU) Day in Columbia on Wednesday, April 13.

Jefferson is a junior from Florence, while Yates is a freshman from Easley. Both are members of the Limestone College football team.

The SCICU supports and promotes the values of independent higher education in South Carolina. It seeks to advance higher education through fundraising, scholarships, and research, as well as by facilitating collaborative activities among the 20 member institutions. The SCICU also enhances a positive public image and encourages government policies that support independent higher education.

During the meeting on Wednesday that started at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, students representing the member institutions heard a S.C. Tuition Grant update from SCICU President & CEO Mike LeFever. They also heard remarks from Rep. Rita Allison (Dist. 36), who received the SCICU Legislative Champion Award.

The group then departed for the S.C. State House and legislative buildings where students and accompanying staff members met with their respective representatives and senators regarding the importance of supporting the South Carolina legislature-funded scholarships (Palmetto Fellows, HOPE scholarships) and the need-based tuition grants.

Jefferson and Yates had an opportunity to meet with several legislators, including Rep. Dennis Moss, and visited the offices of Sen. Harvey Peeler, Sen. Hugh Leatherman, and Sen. Larry Martin.

Governor Nikki Haley proclaimed April 11-15, 2016, as Independent College and University Week.

Jefferson and Yates were accompanied by Communications Director Charles Wyatt, Limestone’s SCICU Liaison, and Amber Anthony, Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations.
