"You Can't Take It With You" At Limestone Theatre Nov. 19-21

Limestone College Theatre will present “You Can’t Take It With You” during a three-night run Nov. 19-21.

Show time is at 7:30 p.m. each day at Limestone College Theatre, which is located at 130 Leadmine Street in Gaffney. Advance tickets are available at www.showtix4u.com. Adult tickets are $12 each. Admission is $10 for non-Limestone students with proper identification, for senior citizens 65 and over, and for children 12-under. Limestone students, faculty and staff are admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door each day at 6:30 p.m.

The production, that includes a cast of 20 Limestone students, is being directed by Dr. Tim Baxter-Ferguson, Director of Theatre and Musical Theatre.

Kaufman and Hart’s “You Can't Take It With You” relates the humorous encounter between a conservative family and the crazy household of Grandpa Martin Vanderhof. Grandpa's family of idiosyncratic individualists amuse with their energetic physical antics and inspire with their wholehearted pursuit of happiness. The stage is filled with chaotic activity from beginning to end, as the loveable family gets into scrapes and overcomes obstacles.

The play premiered in 1936 and won the Pulitzer Prize for drama the next year.

“This classic comedy has always been one of my favorites,” Baxter-Ferguson said. “It quietly breaks every rule to what makes ‘good’ comedy and still manages to be hilarious. Comedy, some of us are taught, should be based on pain and humiliation, and though some of the jokes in this curious play do stem from that, most of the humor draws from an almost manic love for humanity and its Evening Programentricities.

“This strange blended family gives all comers unconditional love and support; and, with very few exceptions, accept all life choices as long as they provide happiness for the chooser and harm no one,” he added. “It’s a pretty simple idea, but it’s a lovely thought.”
