The Limestone College and Community Chorus will present Parts II and III of Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday, April 24, at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Gaffney.
Admission is free and public is invited to attend.
“This is a particularly exciting occasion in numerous ways,” said Dr. Gena Poovey, Professor of Choral/Vocal Music Education and Director of Choral Activities at Limestone. “Musically, we perform the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ exactly in the context in which it was written, in Part III. Accompanied by a chamber orchestra we are thrilled to be using our very own Franco/Flemish harpsichord, which was made possible by a contribution from 1960 alumnus Carroll Kirby, and his wife Fay.
“Vocal solos in the work will be performed by students Rebekah Branham and Kelsey Stanley, community members Jim Hawkins and Sharon Thompson, faculty member Dr. Cathy Siarris, and guest soloists John Siarris and Johnnie Felder,” she added.
The 32-voice chorus includes 25 Limestone students plus community members from Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, Circle of Grace Lutheran Chapel, Grassy Pond Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, and Limestone Presbyterian Church. The chamber orchestra includes music faculty Dr. David B. Thompson playing harpsichord, Dr. Chip Hill playing clarinet, Mary Ada Poole playing viola, and David Hodges playing trumpet. Student members are Miles Hampton playing trumpet and Tyler Scarabino playing timpani.
This performance will be dedicated to the memory of Faculty Emerita Penni O. Griffin, and benefactors Dr. Jay Hammett and Ann Crotzer.
