Limestone Theatre Wins Top SCSTA Award For Third Straight Year

Limestone College Theatre recently captured nine awards at the 2015 South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association (SCSTA) College Festival at Newberry College.

The festival, held this year on Jan. 31, is an annual event that encourages healthy, challenging competition among students from South Carolina colleges.  Ten schools participated this year, with Limestone taking home the biggest honor of “State Sweepstakes” for the third year in a row. “State Sweepstakes” is awarded to the school with the most combined first, second and third place finalists. 

Students participated in various theatre, speech, and performance studies events. Other teams competing included, among others, Furman University, Lander University, Newberry College, and Claflin College.

The following Limestone students placed in their final rounds:

Duet Acting: Jeanna Burch (freshman; Gaffney)/Zach White (junior; Gaffney), second place.

Duet Musical Theatre: Jade Alford (freshman; Gaffney)/Jessie Cantrell (sophomore; Jonesville, SC), first place; Treshawn Ford (freshman; Charleston, SC)/Kinsey Gregg (freshman; Gaffney), second place.

Solo Musical Theatre: Kinsey Gregg, first place; Jade Alford, third place.

Audition Monologues: Anna Grace Bradford (junior; Gaffney), second place; Zach White, third place.

Theatrical Design: William Cody Bostic (senior; Gaffney), second place.

Prose Interpretation; Kasey Jackson (sophomore; Gaffney), first place (second straight year).

The Limestone students studied under the direction of Dr. Tim Baxter-Ferguson, the College’s Director of Theatre and Musical Theatre; and Dr. Carrie Ameling, Associate Professor of Theatre.

Dr. Ameling also conducted an “Intertextuality Performance” Workshop during the event.

The South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association is a professional organization that promotes the study of all areas of performance and oral communication: acting, oral interpretation/performance studies, theatre, broadcasting, public speaking, discussion and debate, and speech/theatre education. The mission of SCSTA is to encourage a passion for excellence in speech and theatre education in South Carolina, thus advancing the total speech and theatre effort in our state. SCSTA serves both the public and private schools and the colleges and universities in South Carolina through three spring festival competitions, and through recognition of outstanding contributors to our efforts.
