Limestone College received a $1,000 donation from Broad River Electric Charities during a check-presentation ceremony on Nov. 14.
All totaled, Broad River Electric handed out $24,500 in donations throughout its service area, including $8,000 in Cherokee County.
In addition to Limestone College, Feed the Community, Trinity Channel of Blessings, Iron City Ministries, Broad River Leatherneck's Toys for Tots, Gaffney Ledger's Christmas is for Kids, Peach Center Ministries, Miracle Hill's Turkey Fry, Potter's Storehouse, Union County Baptist Association, Union County Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, Upstate Family Resource Center's Harvest Family Ministries, Spartanburg Herald Journal's Goodfellows, WBCU's Truck Full of Toys, March of Dimes, Bethel Senior Day Care Center, Cherokee County Mental Health, and Union County Disabilities and Special Needs, each received funds to assist in their ministries and services to the people in Broad River Electric's territory and beyond.
"Since these funds come from donations of the cooperative's membership, we take the responsibility of distributing the money very seriously," said Barbara Whitney, Chairperson of the Broad River Electric Charities Board. "These organizations and charitable campaigns are impacting our communities in wonderful ways and it is an honor to be able to help them."
Donations to the selected charities come from Broad River Electric's Operation Round Up program. Each month, participating members' account balances are rounded up to the nearest dollar. That extra change goes to the benevolent fund that assists organizations and goodwill missions in and around Broad River's service area.
Funds from Operation Round Up are distributed through Broad River Electric Charities, Inc., which is governed by a seven-member board representing the cooperative and the three major counties it serves – Cherokee, Union and Spartanburg. Organizations wishing to request funds can contact the cooperative to begin the application process.
Broad River Electric Charities is a philanthropic subsidiary of Broad River Electric Cooperative, a non-profit, member-owned distribution cooperative providing services to more than 20,000 members in Cherokee, Spartanburg, Union and Newberry counties in South Carolina and Cleveland, Polk and Rutherford counties in North Carolina in order to improve the quality of their lives.
