Limestone College Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Michelle Phillips-Meek was a co-presenter at the recent 65th annual Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) Conference in Jacksonville.
Her session was based on advising students about careers in psychology.
SEPA is the regional association of professional psychologists spanning the entire southeastern United States. To present at SEPA, members must submit a proposal of the workshop topic and impact, which is judged by panels of experts in the field to determine if the workshop would be of high enough merit and interest to members to be accepted.
Phillips-Meek presented alongside Dr. Cherie Clark of Queens University of Charlotte and Dr. Ann Calhoun-Sauls of Belmont Abbey College. Each faculty member presented an activity used in class to advise students about careers, followed by a group discussion of issues surrounding career advising.
Phillips-Meek presented on the informational interview, an assignment that is currently a component of a new course in Limestone’s Psychology department – Orientation to Psychology. The course is designed to help students make the most of their time as Psychology majors, as well as better prepare them for careers and graduate school. The specific assignment not only helps students learn more about a specific career field, but also helps them grow their professional networking skills.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Phillips-Meek attended The College of New Jersey, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Upon graduation, she moved to Columbia to pursue a Master’s and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at the University of South Carolina.
