Limestone University will hold its spring graduation ceremony at Gaffney High School’s stadium on Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m., with Senator Harvey S. Peeler, Jr. serving as the commencement speaker.
Senator Peeler, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, will also receive an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Limestone during the ceremony.
A native of Gaffney, Peeler was elected to the South Carolina Senate in November of 1980. His Senate district is comprised of his home county of Cherokee, along with portions of Spartanburg, Union, and York Counties. Now, with over 40 years of service in the South Carolina Senate, he sits as the second most senior Senator.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to speak to the Limestone University graduating class of 2022 this Saturday right here in my hometown,” Peeler said. “Limestone is a tremendous asset to Gaffney, Cherokee County, and the state of South Carolina.”
The University’s President Dr. Darrell Parker will confer a total of 218 degrees on Saturday, including 124 from Limestone’s On-Campus Program, 74 from its Online Program, and 20 from its Graduate Program. Including the 252 graduates from its various degree programs during this past December’s ceremony, Limestone will award a total of 470 degrees during the 2021-2022 academic year.
The upcoming graduation will also be live-streamed so family and friends unable to be in attendance can view the ceremony. The live-stream link will be available at www.limestone.edu and on all of the University’s social media pages.
“We are thrilled to have Senator Peeler speaking to our graduating class,” Parker noted. “He is truly deserving of the honorary degree that will be bestowed upon him at the ceremony. The Senator and his family have been long-time friends to Limestone.
“We are so excited for this new graduating class, and we can’t wait to congratulate them all on a job well done,” Parker continued. “We also want to recognize the family and friends who have supported these students along the way. This is their day, as well. We are looking forward to Saturday’s ceremony and celebration.”
Gates at the stadium will open at 8:30 a.m. for guests. All seating will be on the home side of the stadium. The Cherokee County School District’s clear bag policy will be enforced at the event.
Graduates and their guests are encouraged to travel to Limestone following the ceremony to visit the front campus and take photographs. Light refreshments will be available on campus between 12 noon and 2 p.m.
If rain or severe weather prevents the graduation from being held outdoors at the stadium, the ceremony will be held on the Limestone campus inside Fullerton Auditorium. If that occurs, due to the limited indoor seating, graduates will receive four tickets each for their guests.
