In an effort to provide some activities for Limestone students while they are finishing out the semester through remote learning due to the coronavirus pandemic, the College has fast-tracked its esports program with an upcoming online gaming tournament.
Zach Lewis, Limestone’s esports coach, announced today that a 1-vs.-1 double-elimination Rocket League tournament will start on Saturday, March 28, for all current Limestone students who have gaming capabilities. Students are also encouraged to invite their friends, who are not enrolled at the College, to join in.
A bracket will be developed once all the gamers are registered for Limestone’s first-ever esports event. Cross-platform play will be allowed.
Students were emailed sign-up details on Thursday, March 19.
“This is an excellent opportunity to provide some entertainment and competition for our students, while exposing Limestone esports to the world for the first time,” Lewis said. “We especially hope that our students who are finishing the semester online either from home or in their dorm rooms on campus will take part so they can engage with their Limestone friends and others who they can’t get together with face-to-face with during this time. This will be a much-needed distraction, and we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
Once Limestone’s esports program officially begins this fall, along with the competitive varsity squads, the College will also offer a recreational gaming club that will have access to the state-of-the-art gaming lab and lounge that will be located inside the Fort Residence Hall.
The gaming club will be the branch of the program that will enable any Limestone student to become involved in esports. By offering regular in-house events, meetings, and intramural tournaments, students will be able to enjoy esports and gaming without the stress of varsity competition.
Limestone’s varsity competitions will be broadcast live on the internet, and Lewis said he also anticipates watch-parties across campus for some of the higher-profile competitions.
