The events surrounding the death of George Floyd are a glaring reminder that many unfortunate divisions continue to be a part of our society. We are brokenhearted about the tragedies taking place across the United States.
Limestone College sends its deepest condolences to the Floyd family and any others who have been impacted by the events over the past several days. It’s our sincere hope that the horrible incident involving Mr. Floyd is the tipping point for change. While this most recent instance is tragic, it is certainly not an isolated occurrence. We are aware of the others that came before, such as Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Christian Cooper, just to name a few.
We stand in solidarity with others who are incensed. We refuse to accept or tolerate unjust treatment of anyone. Many in Limestone Nation are hurting, and we are here for them because we love and support each and every one of our Saints. We’re here to listen, but we’re also here to help make a difference. It’s time for action.
We must work together, harder than ever, to find solutions and enact change to end racial and social prejudice. At Limestone, we are dedicated to doing our part.
For instance, Limestone’s Equity and Inclusion Office is committed to strengthening the “One Limestone” mentality and ensuring every effort is made to cultivate an environment for all faculty, staff, and students to process, heal, and build.
Through virtual meetings, seminars, outreach opportunities and other educationally purposeful events we have planned, Limestone’s Equity and Inclusion Office will implement intensive diversity education programming during the fall semester.
In collaboration with all our campus departments, Limestone will ensure the necessary resources are available to advance our commitment to inclusivity.
Robert F. Kennedy once said, “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope… which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
Together, let’s make a ripple that leads to an ocean of change.
