Limestone's Dr. Renee Dyer Has Study Published In Finance Journal

Limestone University Professor of Business Finance Dr. Renee Dyer recently had her article “Women in Finance: Advice from Female Finance Executives” published in the Applied Economics and Finance Journal.

The article covers Dyer’s research on the factors that lead or discourage women from entering the finance industry. For the study, Dyer interviewed 10 women currently working in different sectors of the finance industry.

Each participant emphasized the need for strong role models for girls and young women starting from school and into the finance industry. They also mentioned the need to demystify and destigmatize finance so that women have a better understanding of what the industry entails and what jobs are available to them. Additionally, they wanted women to understand that they don’t have to choose between family and a career in finance.

Dyer finishes the article by noting that it is important to make more mentorship and internship opportunities for women in college. She suggests that colleges and professors build more relationships with banks, investment firms, corporate finance offices, and other financial institutions so that women have these opportunities during their education.

The Applied Economics and Finance Journal is an international, peer-reviewed, open-resource journal published quarterly. The journal uses a double-blind system for peer-review; both reviewers and authors' identities remain anonymous. Papers are peer-reviewed by three experts; two reviewers from outside and one editor from the journal typically involved in reviewing a submission. The journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

A graduate from Blacksburg High School, Dyer received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Gardner-Webb University in 2008. She then received her Master of Business Administration in Finance from East Carolina University in 2010, and more recently completed a Doctorate in Business Administration from Walden University in 2019. Her paper “Financial Strategies for Long-Term Success of Women-Owned Small Businesses" received the “Best Paper Award” from the Academy of Business Research in August 2020.

Dyer has taught in higher education since 2008 and has been at Limestone since 2017. She is an assistant professor of business finance and the Accounting, Economics, and Finance Department chair.
