Limestone Student Social Work Organization Dedicates Community Service Project To Lisa Glenn

For Lisa Glenn, ringing the bell after completing months of chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer was a big deal.

Glenn soldiered through nausea and exhaustion while she balanced chemo and her duties at Limestone University as an Assistant Professor of Social Work and the Director of the Bachelor of Social Work Field Placement/Course Coordinator.

Her efforts led the Limestone student social work organization to dedicate their latest community service project in Glenn’s honor.

Social work club officers delivered goodie bags on Friday, Nov. 22, to eight women currently being treated for breast cancer at Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute in Gaffney. The bags included comfort items such as blankets, socks, pens, tissues, nail polish, planters, and a glass cup filled with peppermints.

"We want to bring a light to their day,” said Will Rivera, Vice President of Limestone's Student Social Work Organization.

Rivera is one of four student officers enrolled in Social Work 304, a senior level class which focuses on communities and organizations. Their capstone project focused on revitalizing the student social work organization, which nearly folded this year following a period of inactivity.

The aspiring social workers' decision to focus the student group’s efforts on community service projects has helped double membership from six students to 14 since August of this year. A few Limestone online social work students have also stepped forward to donate money toward the organization’s fundraisers.

A “Pie-a-looza” fundraiser was held in late September as a fundraiser to help pay for the goodie bags. Michelle Phillips Meek, Dean of College of Education and Behavior Sciences, and Limestone social work professor Timothy Hanshaw were among the faculty who volunteered for pie duty.

“It was definitely worth it to see a couple professors get a pie in the face,” Limestone social work president Tracie Colbert said. “We just appreciate them for helping us support a good cause. We hope the goodie bags will provide comfort for these patients during their treatment.”
