Cunning Victory Bell Tower Celebration Set For April 14

Clear your calendar because it’s going to be a busy spring at Limestone College.

Three separate public ceremonies will be held at Limestone in the coming weeks to dedicate new additions to the historic campus. The College community will first celebrate the official opening of the Cunning Victory Bell Tower on Sunday, April 14.

Details will soon be announced regarding the later dedications being scheduled for Shannon Hamrick Park and the Bob Prevatte Athletic Complex. Construction of the Hamrick and Cunning projects is complete, and work continues at the Prevatte complex.

The Cunning Victory Bell Tower dedication on April 14 will start at 12 noon. The ceremony will be followed by a men’s lacrosse game against Barton College that gets underway at nearby Saints Field at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend the Victory Bell Tower dedication and then stick around to enjoy the lacrosse action featuring the nationally-ranked Saints.

Named in memory of Barbara Cunning by her husband Dr. Charles Cunning, the Victory Bell Tower overlooks the Limestone Quarry and is situated between the College's athletic and academic facilities. Once work on the Prevatte complex is completed, a campus connector walkway will link the tower to both the upper and lower sections of campus. 

“The Victory Bell Tower is a wonderful addition to our campus,” said Limestone President Dr. Darrell Parker. “We appreciate the Cunning family providing this gift that will not only enable us to commemorate our achievements, but also provide a beautiful space for our students and our community to visit and enjoy.”

The Bell Tower will announce campus celebrations and successes, including each time a Limestone athletic team posts a victory at home or away, by playing the “Blue and Gold” fight song. One of the key features of the structure is the bell inside, which hung from the top of the Curtis Administration Building for several decades until it was removed in 1998.

Dr. Cunning retired from Limestone in May 2016 following 21 years of service to the College.
