Coming off the most successful season in program history – which included a bid into the NCAA Division II National Championship Playoffs – Limestone University’s football team will be back in front of its fans on Saturday, April 15, at 2 p.m., for the Saints’ annual “Blue & White Spring Game.”
The goal of Limestone head coach Mike Furrey is not only to showcase the progress his squad has made during spring practice, but to also bring a festival-like atmosphere to the inter-squad scrimmage being held at Saints Field. Gaffney Dentistry is the title sponsor of the game.
In addition to a sneak peek at the 2023 version of the Saints, fans can expect food trucks, a beverage garden for adults, inflatables for the kids, auction items, and much more. Radio station WZZQ will be doing a two-hour Saints Tailgate Show live from the stadium beginning at 12 noon.
Admission to the scrimmage is free, and general admission parking will be free in available lots around the Limestone campus starting at 11 a.m.
Reserved tailgate spots at Clary Field will be available for purchase beginning on Monday, April 10, at 10 a.m., while supplies last. Visit www.GoLimestoneSaints.com/tickets for tailgate parking orders. Tailgate policies can be found at www.limestone.edu/tailgating.
Bleacher seating will be limited, and fans are encouraged to bring their own bag chairs or blankets.
“We are inviting everyone in Gaffney, Cherokee County, and the Upstate to come out and have a great time at Limestone University on April 15,” Furrey said. “We’re really excited about the talent that we have on this football team. We’re equally excited about opening up our stadium and our campus to our fans, the local community, hundreds of prospective recruits, and the players we have signed to join our team this fall. We going to have a lot of fun together at the spring game.”
Prior to and during the scrimmage, inflatables will be available for children to enjoy. There will also be a silent auction, located underneath the Skybox, that will provide opportunities to play a round of golf with Furrey and several of his assistant coaches, including former National Football League players Jerricho Cotchery and Nate Garner. Other auction items will include autographed footballs, game-worn Limestone football helmets and jerseys, and more.
The beverage garden is being sponsored and operated by Trackside Taproom in Gaffney. Food trucks include Boonjug’s Hillbilly BBQ & Hash, Sugar Daddyz’s, and Sugar Shack Snoballs. A special hospitality area for football alumni is being sponsored by House of Pizza.
The game’s honorary head coaches will include Hamrick Mills President Cameron Hamrick and Parks Automotive Group General Manager Kevin Brizendine.
Limestone faculty members will also be introduced on the field during the game.
Following the contest, fans are welcome to come onto the field to meet the players and coaches.
In Furrey’s first season back at the helm of Limestone’s program, the Saints set a record for most wins in a season as they finished the 2022 campaign 8-3 to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship Playoffs. West Florida got past Limestone in the first round of the postseason and went on to play in the national semifinals before losing to eventual national champion Ferris State.
Furrey began his second stint as the head football coach at Limestone in March of 2022 after spending four seasons as the wide receivers coach on Matt Nagy's staff with the Chicago Bears. The eight-year NFL veteran previously served as Limestone’s head coach in 2016 and 2017.
